      Tips for running a successful, sustainable book club. There are lots of book clubs out there now, and there's more than one way to run a successful one. I've only had experience with mine, so I'll share how ours is organized and why I believe we've had such endurance. If you are in a book club and have some ideas to share, I'd love to hear from. First, fees and dues do not provide true ownership; you don’t own Sam’s Club or Costco just because you are a member. Second, fees and dues are taxable income for the business. Third, fees and dues are not refundable to the member. Administrative fees, if any, should be minimal, keeping the focus on equity and ownership.

    A cooperative (also known as co-operative, co-op, or coop) is "an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned enterprise". Cooperatives may include: businesses owned and managed by the people who use their services (a consumer cooperative). In an effort to reduce the expenditures of Williams College's social organizations, treasurers of the fifteen fraternities and the Garfield Club have agreed upon a plan for cooperative buying.

      There are three main categories of co-operative, with various sub-groups: worker co-ops: owned by employees; consumer co-ops: owned by customers (housing co-ops, credit unions, food purchasing co-ops and social centres/clubs are sub-categories of consumer co-op)producer (or marketing) co-ops: owned by independent producers (farmers, for example) to market their produce. Ireland’s first carers’ co-operative, founded and led by migrant women, will provide “quality care and quality jobs” in a way profit-based agencies cannot, its founders claim.
